She starts with the explosive break up but then goes back to show how it all began and evolved into something that could’ve lasted a lifetime. But the reality of being young in Paris was too much for this young couple to survive. After school, Raphaëlle manages to find a job in publishing, something they both were looking for. Antoine remains unemployed, lost and struggling to find stability.

And that’s how they start to drift apart; she’s moving forward, he’s stuck in place.

After the Party looks at the end of youth, the abruptness of going from the protective bubble of being in school to having to make your way in the real world.

In a similar vein to Annie Ernaux, Lola Nicolle maps the city, takes the pulse of an era, of a generation and of the social markers that divide us. A powerful, generational and feminist text.

Born in 1992, Lola Nicolle is an editor at Editions de L’Iconoclaste. She is also the author of a book of poetry, Nous oiseaux de passage (We Birds of Passage, Blancs Volants, 2017). She lives in Paris and this is her debut novel.
