Marie, a strong-willed and independent women of the Chagos archipelago falls in love at first sight with the strikingly handsome Gabriel, the newly arrived secretary to the archipelago’s Mauritian administrator. Passions flare, Marie quickly falls pregnant, and their son Josephin is born. This new family has nothing but a bright future to look forward to.

But it’s the late 1960s and Mauritius votes to gain independence from Britain. The inhabitants of the archipelago, a dependency of Mauritius, could not know that the Mauritius government would betray them. A secret deal with Britain means that everyone from Chagos will be forced to leave the islands, never allowed to return to home.

While Gabriel knows everything about these political machinations through his job, he is forced to keep it secret from Marie and the other islanders. Just as Marie is devastated to realize that Gabriel hid the truth from her, they are dramatically separated in the chaos of the forced evacuation, not knowing if they will ever be reunited.

In Mauritius, Marie struggles to build a life for herself and Josephin. Meanwhile, Gabriel does everything in his power to be with her and their son but family, secrets and history in the making continue to keep them apart.

Caroline Laurent is French-Mauritian. After the success of Et soudain, la liberté, this is her first novel written on her own.
