In this poignant dual narrative, Aurélie Tramier has crafted a story of love and war with a little known part of history as the backdrop.

May 1940. Hans Weber, a celebrated German musician imprisoned in the Camp des Milles, is visited by his brother’s widow, Elisa. Hans has always been in love with Elisa but has kept his distance out of respect for his brother who saved his life during WWI. Except for one moment of abandon that brought Hans and Elisa together.

Hans had promised his now deceased brother that he would watch over Elisa and their daughter but this is proving to be a promise difficult to keep while trapped in the camp.

The Camp des Milles is a prison for German intellectuals and artists; people who fled Nazi Germany for France only to be taken prisoners out of fear that they be German spies. But for the Germans they are traitors and these men are fearful of their fates once the Nazis occupy France.

Mai 2022, Aix-en-Provence. Esther’s father Jospeh give her an unusual watch with a name engraved on it: Hans W. One month later during a visit to the Camp des Milles, she notices a photograph that is part of the museum’s exhibition. In it, the same watch, on the wrist of a prisoner. This sets Esther off on the search to find out who Hans was and why her family has his watch.

Aurélie Tramier, born in Aix-en-Provence in 1982, studied literature in Paris before turning towards marketing. The mother of three boys, she lives in Munich where she splits her time between writing and working as a consultant. In December 2017, she self-published her first novel Vous reprendrez bien un petit chou ? and then La Belle Étoile published her next two novels Peindre la pluie en couleurs (2020) and Le flamme et le papillon (2022).
