What does a cat think about when watching birds? An elephant while walking in the savanna. A chimpanzee in front of a miroir?

While animals can’t talk to us, recent research in studying animal behavior shows that they have an intense mental activity. Like humans, animals have cognitive abilities that allow them to adapt and adjust to the unique world in which they live.

For a long time, a large gap has separated animals from humans who, alone, were the sole bearer’s of reason. Not necessarily true. Researchers have observed that learning and memory are fundamental elements in the ensemble of cognitive processes amongst animals. This leads to an enormous change in our we view them.

But we can’t say they have mental faculties similar to ours. A horse will never know how to count, nor will an elephant never be able to read a map.

François Y. Doré is a psychology professor at the Université Laval. He has written over a hundred scientific articles in different journals of international renown as well as about 20 books.
