Life in this little port town on the Atlantic coast, in the mid-1960s, is hard and simple, regulated as it always has been by fishing and the sea. Each person has their place, their role, as in time-honoured tradition. An only child, Joseph grows up in the confined space of a family of three, spoiled by his mother and in worship of his father, a deep-sea fisherman.

His life seems to be written out for him: the house, the boat, the Ocean. Until a tragedy smashes his childhood to pieces.

The deeply moving chronicle of a free man buffeted to and fro by the era he lives in. A simple tale about the vanity of time and the end of a world.

François Colcanap lives in New York. Le Naufragé is his first novel.
