Matthieu Suc’s extensive research into the counterintelligence services of the Islamic State covers dozens of judicial files, representing more than 59 000 statements, hundreds of transcriptions of phone calls, interviews, police reports, notes – unclassified or not – to give a fascinating, frightening portrait of their operations. In addition, he interviewed around 15 contacts (secret agents, magistrates, lawyers, researchers, ex-hostages, ex-jihads) and completed this work following the first hearings against jihads returning from Syria.

The fruit of these 8 months of research and investigation is a thorough description of the highly organized workings of the Islamic State’s secret services. He reveals how the soldiers of the Caliphate avoid moles penetrating their ranks in Syria, how their undercover agents roam freely in Europe and, as a result, holds up a frightening mirror to Western counterintelligence. The means employed by Daesh are strikingly similar to those used by the CIA, FBI, DGSI or KGB.

French journalist Matthieu Suc was born in Paris. He began his career as a journalist at the newspaper Le Parisien before working at France-Soir and Le Monde. Since 2016 he works for the investigations department at Mediapart, an online media platform. After spending 10 years reporting on criminal activity, he is no specialized in terrorism and counterintelligence. The Spies of Terror is his fifth book.
