Heidi and Vinnie need to leave London; the whispers are too oppressive. How did they become a couple so quickly after the mysterious disappearance of Noelle, Vinnie’s girlfriend? Vinnie and Noelle went away together recently to a seaside town but he returned all alone.

Now he and Heidi have bought an old, abandoned home along the coast in Cornwall to escape the questioning stares. The home comes with a smuggler’s tunnel leading to the sea and folklore about nixies — water sprites who would lure sailors into the water and kill them. Heidi is very unsettled in this place that will never feel like home — she imagines things, hears things — and Vinnie becomes more and more agitated. They get into such an explosive fight that he packs his things and drives off leaving Heidi stranded on her own.

Rick, a very neighborly farmer helps Heidi get her bearings and the two strike up the beginnings of something more than a flirtation. Just as Heidi starts to think she can cope with her situation, Vinnie’s mother unexpectedly shows up. She knows that Heidi crashed Vinnie’s weekend away with Noelle, that fateful weekend when Noelle disappeared. It turns out that Heidi might not be at all the kind of person she seems to be and she’ll continue to do anything to get her way.

Originally from Hertfordshire, Lucy Banks moved to Devon, where she promptly fell in love with the landscape and lifestyle.
