Far from being a simple fashion phenomenon, the tattoo has become more and more popular around the world. Some even evoke cultural revolutions. Nevertheless, people can be very judgmental towards them. Even if tattoos are considered by many as art, they are also strongly associated with criminality.

But this association is not entirely random. Historically prohibited by the three monotheistic religions, tattoos serve to brand criminals with a seal of infamy and feed all sorts of theories of criminology since the 19th century. It’s therefore not surprising that diverse groups of criminals end up using tattoos as a symbol for their identities.

Mixing law, criminology and the history of civilizations, Benoît Le Dévédec (lawyer) and Arnaud Wallet (tattoo artist) provide a panorama of criminal tattoos and show the connections between tattoos, criminals, crimes and law from French prisons to Latin American gangs by way of Russia and the Irezumi tattoo in Japan.

Benoît Le Dévédec has a PhD from the Institute of Criminology and Penal Law in Paris. This is when he started to study the ties between tattoos, law and criminology.
